Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground turkey
  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs (preferably whole wheat)
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional, for heat)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil (for cooking)
  • 4 whole wheat burger buns
  • 4 slices of cheese (optional, cheddar or Swiss)
  • Lettuce, tomato, and any other desired toppings

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, add the ground turkey.
  2. Sprinkle in the breadcrumbs to help bind the mixture.
  3. Add the grated Parmesan cheese for flavor and moisture.
  4. Finely chop the onion and add it to the bowl.
  5. Mince the garlic cloves and toss them in.
  6. Pour in the Worcestershire sauce and Dijon mustard.
  7. Sprinkle in the dried oregano, salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes (if using).
  8. Using your hands, gently mix everything together until just combined. Avoid overworking the meat.
  9. Divide the mixture into four equal portions and shape them into patties, making them slightly larger than the buns and creating a small indentation in the center.
  10. Heat the olive oil in a large skillet or grill pan over medium heat. Preheat the grill to medium-high if using.
  11. Carefully place the turkey patties in the pan, avoiding overcrowding.
  12. Cook for about 5-6 minutes on the first side without moving them.
  13. Flip the burgers using a spatula. If adding cheese, place a slice on each patty and cover the pan with a lid to melt the cheese.
  14. Continue cooking for another 5-6 minutes, or until the internal temperature reaches 165°F (75°C).
  15. Remove the burgers from the pan and let them rest for a few minutes.
  16. While the burgers rest, prepare the burger buns by toasting them lightly.
  17. Start with the bottom half of the bun and add a layer of lettuce.
  18. Place the turkey burger on top of the lettuce.
  19. Add slices of fresh tomato.
  20. Optionally, add sliced avocado or pickles for extra flavor.
  21. Spread your favorite condiments on the top half of the bun.
