Mexican Coffee: A Guide to Flavor, Origins, and Brewing

  • Total Time: 12 minutes
  • Yield: 1 serving 1x

Description

Rich, comforting Mexican coffee with chocolate, cinnamon, and a hint of spice. Perfect for chilly days.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup freshly brewed strong coffee (Mexican coffee beans preferred)
  • 1 ounce Mexican chocolate, chopped (Ibarra or Abuelita brands)
  • 1/4 cup whole milk (or milk alternative)
  • 1 tablespoon piloncillo sugar, grated (or brown sugar)
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Pinch of ground cloves
  • Pinch of cayenne pepper (optional)
  • Whipped cream, for topping (optional)
  • Cinnamon stick, for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Brew Coffee: Brew a cup of strong coffee. Mexican coffee beans are recommended, but any dark roast will work.
  2. Combine Ingredients: In a small saucepan, combine chopped Mexican chocolate, milk, piloncillo sugar (or brown sugar), ground cinnamon, ground cloves, and cayenne pepper (if using).
  3. Heat and Whisk: Place the saucepan over medium-low heat. Whisk constantly until the chocolate is completely melted and the sugar is dissolved. Do not boil. (5-7 minutes)
  4. Incorporate Coffee: Slowly pour in the freshly brewed coffee while continuing to whisk.
  5. Simmer: Reduce the heat to low and let the coffee simmer gently for 2-3 minutes, stirring occasionally. Do not boil.
  6. Pour into Mugs: Carefully pour the Mexican coffee into mugs.
  7. Top (Optional): Top with whipped cream.
  8. Garnish (Optional): Garnish with a cinnamon stick.
  9. Serve: Serve immediately.

Notes

  • Adjust sweetness by adding more or less piloncillo or brown sugar.
  • Increase cayenne pepper for a spicier coffee. Experiment with nutmeg or allspice.
  • Use almond milk, soy milk, or oat milk as a milk alternative.
  • Add a teaspoon of vanilla extract for added flavor.
  • For iced coffee, let the coffee cool completely and then pour it over ice.
  • Experiment with different types of chocolate, such as dark chocolate or milk chocolate.
  • For an adult version, add a shot of tequila or Kahlua to each mug.
  • Use a frother after you have combined all the ingredients to create a foamy top without whipped cream.
