Description

Enjoy a delicious breakfast with Hawaiian Roll French Toast, featuring soft, sweet rolls soaked in a rich egg and milk batter, cooked to golden perfection. Serve with warm maple syrup and fresh berries for a delightful start to your day.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 12 Hawaiian rolls
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter (for cooking)
  • Maple syrup (for serving)
  • Powdered sugar (for garnish, optional)
  • Fresh berries (for garnish, optional)

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, crack the 4 large eggs and whisk them until they are well beaten.
  2. Add 1 cup of whole milk to the eggs and continue whisking until the mixture is smooth and fully combined.
  3. Stir in 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract, 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon, and 1/4 teaspoon of nutmeg (if using). Mix well to ensure the spices are evenly distributed.
  4. Finally, add 2 tablespoons of granulated sugar to the mixture and whisk until the sugar is dissolved. Set the batter aside.
  5. Take the 12 Hawaiian rolls and slice them in half horizontally. You can keep them connected or separate them, depending on your preference.
  6. Once sliced, gently press down on the rolls to flatten them slightly. This will help them absorb the batter better.
  7. Place the sliced rolls in a shallow dish or a large baking dish, cut side up, to prepare for soaking in the batter.
  8. Pour the prepared batter evenly over the sliced Hawaiian rolls, ensuring that each piece is well-coated. You may need to use a spatula to help spread the batter over the rolls.
  9. Let the rolls soak in the batter for about 10-15 minutes. This allows the bread to absorb the flavors and moisture from the egg mixture.
  10. While the rolls are soaking, preheat a large skillet or griddle over medium heat. Add 1 tablespoon of unsalted butter to the skillet and let it melt, coating the surface evenly.
  11. Once the skillet is hot and the butter is melted, carefully place the soaked Hawaiian rolls in the skillet, cut side down. You may need to cook them in batches depending on the size of your skillet.
  12. Cook the rolls for about 3-4 minutes on the first side, or until they are golden brown and crispy. Avoid overcrowding the skillet to ensure even cooking.
  13. Using a spatula, gently flip the rolls over and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes on the other side until they are also golden brown.
  14. Once cooked, transfer the French toast to a plate and keep warm in a low oven (around 200°F or 93°C) while you finish cooking the remaining rolls.
  15. Once all the Hawaiian roll French toast is cooked, stack them on serving plates or a large platter.
  16. Drizzle warm maple syrup generously over the top of the French toast. You can also serve the syrup on the side for dipping.
  17. If desired, dust the French toast with powdered sugar for an extra touch of sweetness and presentation.
  18. Garnish with fresh berries such as strawberries, blueberries, or raspberries for a pop of color and added flavor.
  19. Serve immediately while warm, and enjoy your delicious Hawaiian Roll French Toast!

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, consider using half-and-half or heavy cream instead of whole milk in the batter.
  • Experiment with different spices such as cardamom or allspice for a unique twist on the traditional flavor.
  • If you prefer a sweeter French toast, increase the amount of sugar in the batter to taste.
  • For added texture, consider adding chopped nuts or chocolate chips to the batter before soaking the rolls.
