- 2 tablespoons olive oil or butter
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar (optional, for a sweet glaze)
- 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard (optional, for a tangy flavor)
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon smoked paprika (optional, for a smoky flavor)
- Fresh herbs (like thyme or rosemary, for garnish)
- Lemon wedges (for serving)
Instructions
- Choose Your Ham Steak: Select two thick slices of ham steak, preferably bone-in for added flavor, about 1 inch thick for even cooking.
- Pat Dry: Pat the ham steaks dry with paper towels to achieve a nice sear.
- Seasoning: Mix garlic powder, black pepper, and smoked paprika in a small bowl. Rub this mixture on both sides of the ham steaks. If desired, sprinkle brown sugar on one side.
- Optional Glaze: Mix Dijon mustard with olive oil or melted butter and brush over the ham steaks for extra flavor.
- Heat the Pan: In a large skillet, heat olive oil or butter over medium-high heat until shimmering.
- Sear the Ham Steaks: Place the ham steaks in the skillet and cook undisturbed for 4-5 minutes until golden-brown.
- Flip and Cook: Flip the ham steaks using tongs and cook the other side for another 4-5 minutes until the internal temperature reaches 145°F (63°C).
- Baste for Extra Flavor: Spoon hot oil or butter from the pan over the ham steaks while cooking to keep them moist.
- Rest the Ham Steaks: Remove from skillet and let rest for 5 minutes on a cutting board.
- Slice and Plate: Slice the ham steaks into thick strips or serve whole.
- Garnish: Sprinkle fresh herbs over the top for added flavor and visual appeal.
- Serve with Lemon Wedges: Serve with lemon wedges on the side for a bright flavor contrast.
