Description
Golden French toast sticks made with challah, brioche, or Texas toast, soaked in rich custard, and cooked to perfection. Perfect for breakfast or brunch!
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 loaf challah bread, brioche, or Texas toast (about 1 inch thick slices)
- 6 large eggs
- 1 cup milk (whole milk or half-and-half recommended for richness)
- 1/4 cup heavy cream (optional, but adds extra creaminess)
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- Pinch of salt
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, for cooking
- Powdered sugar, for dusting (optional)
- Maple syrup, for serving
- Fresh berries, for serving (optional)
Instructions
- Prepare the Egg Mixture: In a large, shallow dish, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream (if using), sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until fully combined and smooth.
- Prepare the Bread: Slice the bread into 1-inch thick slices (if needed). Cut each slice into sticks, about 1 inch wide.
- Soak the Bread Sticks: Gently place a few bread sticks into the egg mixture at a time. Let them soak for about 20-30 seconds per side, until saturated but not falling apart.
- Cook the French Toast Sticks: Melt about 1 tablespoon of butter in a large skillet or griddle over medium heat. Carefully place the soaked bread sticks into the skillet, leaving some space between them. Cook for about 2-3 minutes per side, or until golden brown and cooked through. Adjust heat as needed to prevent burning.
- Repeat: Repeat the soaking and cooking process with the remaining bread sticks, adding more butter to the skillet as needed.
- Keep Warm (Optional): Keep cooked French toast sticks warm in a preheated oven (200°F) on a baking sheet in a single layer.
- Serve: Dust with powdered sugar (optional), drizzle with maple syrup, and serve with fresh berries.
Notes
- Use slightly stale bread for best results.
- Don’t overcrowd the skillet.
- Adjust sweetness by adding more sugar to the egg mixture.
- Experiment with spices like cardamom, ginger, or allspice.
- For Cinnamon Roll French Toast Sticks: Add a swirl of cinnamon sugar to the bread before soaking.
- For Chocolate French Toast Sticks: Add cocoa powder to the egg mixture.
- For Savory French Toast Sticks: Omit sugar and vanilla, add savory herbs, and serve with a fried egg and bacon.
