French Toast Sticks: The Ultimate Guide to Making Perfect Breakfast Treats

  • Total Time: 30 minutes
  • Yield: 12-16 French toast sticks 1x

Description

Golden French toast sticks made with challah, brioche, or Texas toast, soaked in rich custard, and cooked to perfection. Perfect for breakfast or brunch!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 loaf challah bread, brioche, or Texas toast (about 1 inch thick slices)
  • 6 large eggs
  • 1 cup milk (whole milk or half-and-half recommended for richness)
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream (optional, but adds extra creaminess)
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • Pinch of salt
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, for cooking
  • Powdered sugar, for dusting (optional)
  • Maple syrup, for serving
  • Fresh berries, for serving (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Egg Mixture: In a large, shallow dish, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream (if using), sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until fully combined and smooth.
  2. Prepare the Bread: Slice the bread into 1-inch thick slices (if needed). Cut each slice into sticks, about 1 inch wide.
  3. Soak the Bread Sticks: Gently place a few bread sticks into the egg mixture at a time. Let them soak for about 20-30 seconds per side, until saturated but not falling apart.
  4. Cook the French Toast Sticks: Melt about 1 tablespoon of butter in a large skillet or griddle over medium heat. Carefully place the soaked bread sticks into the skillet, leaving some space between them. Cook for about 2-3 minutes per side, or until golden brown and cooked through. Adjust heat as needed to prevent burning.
  5. Repeat: Repeat the soaking and cooking process with the remaining bread sticks, adding more butter to the skillet as needed.
  6. Keep Warm (Optional): Keep cooked French toast sticks warm in a preheated oven (200°F) on a baking sheet in a single layer.
  7. Serve: Dust with powdered sugar (optional), drizzle with maple syrup, and serve with fresh berries.

Notes

  • Use slightly stale bread for best results.
  • Don’t overcrowd the skillet.
  • Adjust sweetness by adding more sugar to the egg mixture.
  • Experiment with spices like cardamom, ginger, or allspice.
  • For Cinnamon Roll French Toast Sticks: Add a swirl of cinnamon sugar to the bread before soaking.
  • For Chocolate French Toast Sticks: Add cocoa powder to the egg mixture.
  • For Savory French Toast Sticks: Omit sugar and vanilla, add savory herbs, and serve with a fried egg and bacon.
