Ingredients
Scale
- 1 cup of milk (whole, skim, or your favorite non-dairy alternative)
- 1 shot of espresso (or 1/2 cup of strong brewed coffee)
- 2 tablespoons of vanilla syrup
- 1 tablespoon of caramel sauce (plus extra for drizzling)
- Ice cubes (if serving iced)
- Optional: whipped cream for topping
Instructions
- Brew your espresso using an espresso machine or make a strong cup of coffee (about 1/2 cup) using a French press or drip coffee maker.
- Set the espresso or coffee aside to cool slightly.
- In a small saucepan, combine 1 cup of water, 1 cup of granulated sugar, and 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract.
- Heat over medium heat, stirring until the sugar dissolves. Simmer gently for about 5 minutes.
- Remove from heat and let cool. Store any leftover syrup in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a month.
- Heat the milk in a small saucepan over medium heat until hot but not boiling. Froth the milk if you have a frother.
- For an iced version, fill a glass with ice cubes.
- Pour 2 tablespoons of vanilla syrup into your serving glass (first layer for iced version).
- Pour the hot frothed milk over the vanilla syrup (or over ice for iced version).
- Slowly pour the espresso or strong coffee over the milk to create layers.
- Drizzle 1 tablespoon of caramel sauce on top, adding more if desired.
- Optionally, top with whipped cream and an extra drizzle of caramel sauce.
- Gently stir to mix flavors, being careful not to disturb the layers too much.
- Serve immediately with a straw or spoon, and enjoy your homemade caramel macchiato!
